INKA TRAIL 2D/1N
Day 1: CUSCO – KM 104 - AGUAS CALIENTES.
We will pick up the group from their hostel/hotels at 5:30 am and take them
to the San Pedro train station. The train will take us to Km. 104 on the Cusco –
Machupicchu Railway where we will begin our trek around 10 am. The journey
begins crossing a wood suspension bridge over the Willkamayu River (Urubamba
River). The first ruin we will visit is the famous Inka Sanctuary and Palace of
Chachabamba. After a brief introduction to Inca History, we will climb roughly 8
km (3 hours) to reach the archaeological site of Wiñaywayna (2700 m.a.s.l.),
second only to Machupicchu in beauty. The site is a classic example of Inca
terrace farming and was probably an experimental laboratory for agriculture in
Inca times. The name Wiñaywayna comes from a beautiful orchid typical in this
zone, meaning forever young. We will continue our trek crossing though the cloud
forest on a narrow path until we reach the Inti Punku (Sun Gate). The Sun Gate
offers a spectacular view of Machupicchu (weather permitting). This special
point is where most hikers get the best photos of the sacred city.
Following Inti Punku, we will descend to Machupicchu on foot and down to Aguas
Calientes by bus where we will spend the night in a hostel. You may relax in hot
springs at Aguas Calientes or enjoy a walk through this charming village
situated aside the Urubamba River.
Day 2: AGUAS CALIENTES –MACHUPICCHU-CUSCO.
After an early breakfast we will take the bus to the Sanctuary of
Machupicchu (20 min). This will be an early morning to beat the crowds at
Machupicchu. Once there our guide will lead us through the most important
sectors of this great Inca City, including Intiwatana (solar clock), the Sun
Temple, the urban sector, and the agricultural sector. This informative tour
will last approximately 2 ½ hours. After the tour you will have free time to
explore the ruins on your own or just relax and take in the majesty of the site.
We suggest catching a bus down to Aguas Calientes by 1:00pm. In Aguas Calientes
you may have lunch and then take the train back to Cusco. The train ride will
last about 4 hours, arriving in Cusco after nightfall.
